Darkmatter
Kim Gijoo
March 21 - April 17, 2024
25 Rue de Beaune, Paris, France
In Korean Art, matter is of primary importance. Kim Gijoo confirms this essential principle in a set of works presented today by Magna Gallery Paris.
Each of the “paintings” in this exhibition bears the aesthetic force of line, form, textures, colors and their nuances. This is a true painter’s work, carried by the patience and precision of the craftsman.
From this material, Kim Gijoo carefully prepares each fragment - often wood here - of the large compositions. Each one becomes a piece of art in its own right: cut, sculpted, engraved and painted. He thus reconciles, in his works, the concept and the method.
On the one hand, he affirms the idea of a beauty that is entirely due to the effect on our gaze. This visual impression of their materiality made of a harmonious precision and rigor. Kim Gijoo reveals the subtle brilliance that brings the infinite possible variations for each painting.
On the other hand, Kim Gijoo reminds us that this plastic beauty would be nothing without technical mastery and perfection of gesture. The gesture that chooses with discernment. The one that "matches" - since it is a question of "assortments" according to the recurring title of the pieces presented - by a flawless taste, for the balance between colors and shapes. Kim Gijoo matches and "adjusts", so that each element of the composition fits together accurately in its visual and aesthetic purpose.
I invite you to contemplate the works in this exhibition with a double gaze, and a double consideration, for the perfect form in every way and also, just as much, for the action of the artist, his intuition and his application, which entirely participate in the value of an authentic work.
