The attraction of Hoon Moreau's works is undeniable. It certainly stems from the materiality of paintings that belong as much to the realm of painting as they do to sculpture. Their presence asserts itself without gravity. On the contrary, they break free from heaviness, carried by the dynamic interplay of sharp, perfectly drawn lines. The movement of forms and the balance of volumes are further enhanced by remarkable craftsmanship in the treatment of materials. Hoon Moreau employs a unique trilogy of materials: wood, metal, and Chinese ink.
This, as the artist herself admits, is the very essence of her creations. She draws inspiration from mysterious, complex, singular, and yet deeply poetic phenomena that govern time and space. Hoon Moreau’s intent is not purely aesthetic. It is based on a profound and personal reflection, making her work a true vehicle for transmission. Her pieces invite contemplation of the universe and our place within it. The artist thus explores the mysteries of the cosmos, infinity, and astrophysical forces. The poetic dimension of her work naturally informs the titles of her pieces.
There is no need to reiterate the importance of elements—these materials, specifically—in Korean art, whether traditional or contemporary. Yet, they also play a major role in Hoon Moreau's work. This fusion—the term "alloy" might even be fitting—between precious woods and gold creates the alchemy necessary to captivate the eye and evoke a more complete sensory experience beyond mere visual appreciation. Is metal shinier than ebony? Is polished metal more delicate to the touch than carved wood? The answers to these questions may vary depending on the light and the viewing angle. Hoon Moreau’s works can be appreciated in multiple variations, responding to their surroundings at any given moment.
It grants them "gravitational force" and "strong but subtle interaction," allowing the works to harmoniously occupy the space dedicated to them in this exhibition. Whether wall-mounted or free-standing, in the form of paintings, polyptychs, sculptural compositions, or even functional furniture, each piece exerts its own "attraction" on the viewer, offering a complete contemplative experience of accomplished artistry.
