Biography

KO Song-Hwa
고송화

Ko Song-Hwa was born in Korea, she lives and works in Paris.

Ko Song-Hwa graduated from Hong-Ik University, where she obtained her master's degree from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Seoul. In France, at the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, she pursued a DEA and a doctorate in Plastic Arts. Ko Song-Hwa is a member of the Sonamou association. She has been distinguished by several artistic prizes in Korea and France.

Her work has a prominent place in the Korean Dansaekhwa movement. Ko Song-Hwa perfectly integrates the concepts in which she was trained by her masters during her studies in Seoul, Park Seo-Bo and Ha Chong-Hyun. Ko Song-Hwa's painted paintings therefore respond to a monochrome aesthetic in which the material takes as important a place as the color and the line.

In the “waves” series, begun in 2009 and forming a major axis in the artist’s work, Ko Song-Hwa composes works whose materiality imposes itself elegantly on the eye. The outline of these waves in the painting of a deep color, created by the play of lights of infinite vibrations that make the composition perpetually in motion. Ko Song-Hwa uses for this ample and delicate drawing, her perfect mastery of traditional calligraphy. which she has practiced since her young age and which transmits a complete authenticity to her paintings. The gesture also holds, in the depth of the furrow printed on the material, of engraving, an art that the Korean artist also practices brilliantly.

Under Ko Song-Hwa’s brush, her paintings go beyond this aesthetic concept which remains a relevant reference to Western abstraction. The waves, luminous, or perhaps even sound, transform the space of the canvas with a great force of evocation. It becomes water, earth, air. An elementary form whose importance is well known in Korean painting, which is so attached to the presence of the five elements in a work of art.

Ko Song-Hwa's work is regularly exhibited in major solo or group exhibitions. In Korea: UHM Gallery, Cerestar Gallery, Sehema Museum, Datz Museum of Gwang Ju, Raum Center, ... In France in Paris: Françoise Livinec Gallery, Galerie 89, Salon H, Abstract Project Gallery, Salon Comparaison, ... Ko Song Hwa has also been exhibited in the United States, Japan, India, and China. Her works are present in the public collections of the city of Saint-Mandé, as well as in the collections of Seoul: Pung Kook Co, Tanhay Co UHM Gallery.
