Biography

KIM Gijoo
김기주

Kim Gijoo was born in 1984 in South Korea, he lives and works in Paris.

Graduated in 2014 from the University of Paris VIII in Contemporary Art and New Media after a double degree in Visual Arts, the artist was quickly spotted for his unique talent. Elected member of the Sonamou Association in Paris in 2022, he in turn became involved in the representation of young Korean talents on the Parisian scene. A student of master Lee Bae, he participated in the prestigious residency program of the Young Eun Museum in Korea (2023), and became President of the Association of Young Korean Artists in Paris (AJAC).

His art develops around an original and personal universe exhibited on numerous occasions in galleries: Galerie M9, Galerie 24 Beaubourg, Galerie PHD, Magna Paris Gallery or in international museums (Paris, Seoul, Ankara, Versailles).

Kim Gijoo works in line with the great Korean tradition around the relationship between man and nature. Through abstract compositions in mosaics of charred wood. Meditative and organic approach whose aesthetic is naturally inspired by that of Lee Bae, his mentor.

Appreciated by collectors and fans of the Dansaekhwa movement as much as by curators of public exhibitions, he participates in many artistic and creative events such as the “Nuit de la Création” organized by the City of Versailles, the exhibitions presented by the cities of Honfleur in 2017 “Korea Live”, by the City of Paris in 2021 “Oxymore at La Sorbonne”, by that of Seoul in 2023 (Solo exhibition, Young Eun Art Museum, Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do). He is regularly invited or exhibited by the Korean Cultural Center in Paris (“Patterns”, “Outre Mesure” & “Dessin à dessein” from 2019 to the present day).

His works are collected in Europe, the United States of America and Asia, integrating important public and private collections. Examples include the Young Eun Art Museum in South Korea, the Franco-Korean Chamber of Commerce, the Arke Paris/Hong Kong law firm, the Inkel Co., Ltd. collection and that of Myungju File Co., Ltd., Triangle Co., Ltd., and that of Kim Min-Jung.
